Pan Am Championships: Elias going for 3rd title as Maiden finals for Bunyan, Ray and Palomino!

The table is now set for the 2024 Pan American Championships Men and Women’s titles as Nicole Bunyan and Danielle Ray made history for Canada in the women’s event, while Colombia’s Ronald Palomino reached the final for the first time in his career to earn a showdown with two-time champion (2018 & 2023) World #4 Diego Elias of Peru. Diego also has two Pan Am Games to his credit (2019 & 2023).

]This will be the first time ever for an all-Canadian final in the Women’s event after #1 seed Nicole Bunyan and Danielle Ray defeated their talented Colombian opponents.  Bunyan squeaked past Lucia Bautista 3-11, 11-9, 15-13, 8-11, 11-9 in 50 minutes and Ray overcame Catalina Pelaez 9-11, 11-7, 13-11, 13-11 in 30 minutes. This final will be a first  Bunyan and Ray guaranteeing  another Pan American Women’s title for Canada to compliment titles by Hollie Naughton (2023) Margo Green (2000) and Laura Wagner (1998).

 

In the men’s final, World #4 and reigning Pan American Champion Diego Elias who defeated Canada’s David Baillargeon 11-8,11-7,11-3 in the semifinals will face off against underdog Ronald Palomino of Colombia.

 

 

The Colombian Palomino has been in splendid form all week, taking down [5/8] seed Diego Gobbi in the second round before blowing away the #2 seed Argentina’s Leandro Romiglio 11-7, 11-1, 11-4 in the quarter-final and defeating the [5/8] seed Salah Eltorgman of Canada in the semifinals 11-4, 11-1, 4-11, 11-8.
