GUATEMALA HITS HOME RUN HOSTING II PAN AM JUNIOR OPEN

Guatemala City recently played host to a vibrant showcase of young squash talent as 158 junior athletes, ranging from under-11 to under-17, competed in the II Pan American Junior Open. Held from August 28–31 at the Asociación Deportiva Nacional de Squash, the event drew players from 17 countries across the Pan American region, all battling for prestigious age-group titles and national pride. This was the first year a U11 and U13 boy’s and girl’s draw was added.

PANAM Squash President Sergio Becerra honored Maycol Padilla, General Manager of the National Squash Sports Association of Guatemala, with a special Appreciation Award. The recognition highlighted the exceptional organization of the tournament, which included thoughtful amenities such as free transportation, tournament shirts, thermoses, and complimentary accommodation for 120 players.

The championship marked a historic milestone for Guatemala, with its young athletes earning two silver and five bronze medals—a significant achievement that underscored the country’s growing presence on the international squash stage.

Delivering a tournament of this scale required precision and expertise. Technical Director and Championship Referee Leonard Arozena showcased outstanding leadership by orchestrating an impressive 474 matches across 10 courts—all within just four days.
