SQUASH HISTORY MADE IN RIO AT PAN AM CHAMPIONSHIPS!

The 2025 Pan American Squash Championships took place from August 21st to 27th in the iconic city of Rio de Janeiro, at the historic Paissandu Atletico Clube. With its stunning view of Christ the Redeemer, one of the modern wonders of the world, this venue provided the perfect setting for PANAM Squash’s most prestigious championship.

RIO2025 marked a historic milestone as the largest championship in the federation’s 26-year history. It featured 126 athletes from 19 different countries, including 12 countries who were competing for a coveted spot in the 2026 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, set to take place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, next August.

Club members had the unique opportunity to watch elite athletes such as World #2 Diego Elias, #13 Leonel Cardenas, and #23 Miguel Rodriguez. The event also welcomed esteemed dignitaries including:

Marco La Porta, President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee,  Carlos Garcia Castillo, Peruvian Consulate General and Ryan Rowlands, U.S. Consulate General of Rio.

Special recognition was given to Brazil’s Adrianna Moura, the 1994 and 1996 Pan American Women’s Champion, who made a star appearance.

This year’s championship also made history for Brazil with Laura Silva and Pedro Mometto both medaling, marking the first time two Brazilian athletes have won individual medals at the same championship.

During the championships, Team USA hosted an introductory Squash 57 clinic on the glass show court for kids from the FuturoBom, a program that bridges the gap between formal education and physical activity for over 1,000 youngsters in Rio de Janeiro area.  The clinic also featured an opportunity for Squashinhos—another impactful sports and education initiative that offers free English and squash lessons to disadvantaged children—to play and interact with the U.S. Consulate General Ryan Rowlands and members of Team USA.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Brazilian Squash Confederation, with special recognition to José Henriques Lopes and Bianca Seidi, for their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts in bringing this prestigious tournament to life.

A massive thanks to the Paissandu Atletico Clube for hosting a spectacular event in such a distinguished, iconic and inspiring setting. We are especially grateful to Club President Lawrence Magrath, a legend in South American squash community, for his generous support, guidance and hospitality throughout the championship.

A special congratulations to the PANAM SQUASH Technical Team, led by Nelson Neto (Technical Director), Leo Arozena (Assistant Technical Director), &  Ramiro Maldonado(Championship Referee), along with his outstanding team of 12 referees. Their professionalism, expertise, and commitment were vital to the success of this event.
